I think it's a combination of an ignorance of international affairs and a lack of international travel.

According to a study by Stephen Bennett, Americans had the least knowledge of international affairs in comparison to their counterparts in Germany, Britain, Canada and France.[6] And another study showed that 81% of people surveyed in Mexico, Spain, Italy, Canada, Germany, Britain and France could answer at least one question about international affairs (usually, "Who is the president of X country?"), but only 63% of Americans could.[7]

Below, is a world map distorted by the number of times a country was reported about in American media in February 2010. The majority of the stories are about America and the second most stories are about Iraq, where American troops are stationed.

If this map is any indication of the exposure that most American receive about international events, then I would argue that it's close to zero in mainstream media. That's not to say that it's not freely available, but an American has to try hard to look for it.

A good example of this phenomenon is the cover of Time in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world. Although the same articles are published inside, the covers suggest that even Americans' perception of news is extremely egocentric.

American misconceptions about other nations are so ridiculous that designer Yanko Tsvetkov made this sarcastic depiction of what American think about the rest of the world.[8] As ridiculous and disturbing as some of these labels seem, I went to high school and college with some people who literally believed these stereotypes.

Since Americans don't hear about the rest of the world through the news, it also doesn't help that we don't see it with our own eyes. Although almost 35% of Americans have a passport, most of those passport holders are immigrants. Only about 5% of Americans use it for travel.[9]

How can Americans be jealous of something that we don't even know exists?
