When I first saw the script of Terminator, I was discussing playing the role of Kyle Reese, the time traveler who came from the future to protect Sarah. But when I sat with James Cameron to go through the story and discussed more detail of the role, I felt myself more connected with T-800. Then I shared my ideas to James, and he suddenly said “Why don’t you play the terminator?” I was hesitant about this, because T-800 was villain and only had 18 lines in whole movie. James insisted and tried to pitch me that this movie’s title is “The Terminator” and T-800 will be the leading for sure. He also said “ Although the terminator is just a machine , you can change it to be a Hero in your own way.” I was convinced and moved by the passion James showed to me. So I took the role.

I wasn’t in the States during movie release and also didn’t realize it would be so popular and successful. But when I came back the States, I was stopped by passerby’s on the streets of New York and asked me to said the line “ I’ll be back”. The whole production team and myself didn’t see this coming, but “ I’ll be back” became one of the most classic lines in movie history. I didn’t think the movie would be so successful when I agreed to play the role. And it was one of the top best action movies of all times for sure.

“The Terminator” brought me great success as an actor and also took me to the next level of my career, and made me a real Hollywood action movie star. I am grateful that James Cameron gave me this one-life-time opportunity to play T-800. Of course, he is the best director and creator. Few years later, James and I also worked together in “The Terminator 2: Judgement Day”, we had a decent budget approved after T-1’s great success. It was a big investment at that time. There were new possibilities of visual effects with progress of technology development. We got a new CG character T-1000, a more advanced and powerful cyborg, while I also had more action scenes in this movie. I started my training few months earlier before production and Linda also spent months to shape her body to be Sarah Connor.

I always knew that T-2 was not an ordinary sequel. It would be as great as T1. Like we expected, T2 also opened big and successful. What I don’t know is that these two Terminator movies would become the classic sci-fi movies of all time and today fans still love it. Most importantly , I met James Cameron and Linda Hamilton. We have been close friends for 35 years.

I often ride motorcycle with James, and two years ago, when we went out riding, he said he had a new idea about the Terminator, and would like to have Linda to come back as Sarah Connor. All my favorite will join. I had no hesitation to join this movie. I am very happy to work with them again in “Terminator: Dark Fate”. I found the same vibe that we had when we shooting T-1 and T-2 on site. It is amazing that we can expand the story from the Judgement Day and I can tell you it is a great movie and sequel of The Terminator.
